Hogget/ mutton – nutritionally the best supply of tryptophan, and B vitamins, plus fat is needed to up take your vitamins and minerals.
Hogget, mutton, ( and turkey) have tryptophan. It is an essential amino acid, meaning that the body can’t manufacture it. The body has to get tryptophan and other essential amino acids from food. Tryptophan helps the body produce the B-vitamin niacin, which, ¬in turn, helps the body produce serotonin, a remarkable chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain, plays a key role in sleep, results in a feeling of calmness, so nerves are not an issue.
Our sugars of choice are
1)Maple syrup, supplies calcium, good for cramp, muscle spasm prevention.
2)A natural seaweed supplement for complex sugars. Research reports that sea weed supplements are made of a set of vital, complex sugars that are essential for proper cellular communication. Our supplement of choice for the rapid conversion of on board sugar/ glucose into instant energy.
A high-powered sea nutrient favoured by the most robust sea going paddlers on the planet. .. taken in the morning by paddlers it helps the human body regenerate at cellular level. Especially just before a race – providing a boost to help power up before Waka heats and finals.
As a food, seaweed is a highly nourishing and contributing factor to the robust strength and vitality of the people of Tonga.

For antioxidants we prefer to eat all the colours of the rainbow, every colour of fruit and veg you can get hold of.
What to eat. Diet regime is meat and three veg. A cave man diet.
This cuts out most white food groups.
White milk, is so processed it is not full of calcium, it is full of phosphorus, that will actually reduce your on board calcium level. See stats on Nz osteoporosis, a nation of milk drinkers.
White bread is actually a mixture of additives, insecticides and flow agents, an interesting cocktail. Our natural therapy practice is built upon the effects of white food in your diet.
See our web site for more info on nutrition, stress, and toxicity www.painrelief.co.nz has further interesting reading and photo’s of last year’s winning team members.
Nutrition
In short white bread will not supply your body with good building blocks.
White sugar will negate what good nutrition you can get.
Stress, will negate good nutrition. Stress comes in many forms like extreme exercise, emotional stress, or mechanical stress like locked up joints.
Naturopaths well recognise elite sports athletes are at greater health risk than couch potatoes. Couch potatoes do not sweat out their trace minerals. Athletes don’t just sweat out water and salt, there are over 60 trace minerals to be sweated out
. New Zealand school science classes target cobalt and selenium, as the major trace minerals that are short in our soils, but minor trace minerals all have their uses. Some folk will try and tell you supplementation only leads to expensive urine. So why do naturopaths personally supplement, because they would rather have expensive urine than a heart attack.
What to take. Families bring a chilli bin, a great camp site washing up sink, keeps the water hot.
Bring chairs if you prefer not to eat your breakfast standing up..
Bring potato peeler if you like your kumera peeled – for the daily on site evening hangi.
All eating folk and Paddlers Bring. Your own named: Tea towel. Chair, plate, bowl, egg cup, fork, knife, spoon, drinking mug or cup.
If cold showers and camping is not your cuppa tea, your tea mug ends up as your comfort zone.
If your body can not cope with sleeping on the hard ground, bring a camp stretcher. If you have more organic issues with your back or neck, get these issues sorted before hand.
